FOLK MEDICINE (2007)
Don't you cry for me
Don't you cry for me
I am only trying to be free
Don't you cry for me
Surely you must know
That in time all things go
And for every high there will be a low
Surely you must know
I've been locked away in my prison cell
With the secrets that I've kept so well
I was blind but now I see
So wash away your tears and don't you cry for me
Don't you cry for me
Don't you cry for me
I am only trying to be free
Don't you cry for me
My friend if you will listen, I ask of you no more
Please beware the devil's child we've come to know as war
I beg of you be careful of the things that you believe
For war has always found a way to lie and to deceive
War will lead the heedless, deluded and spellbound
And convince unwary men to strike their brothers down
Now, the eyes of war are quick to see the color of your skin
The anger and the weakness that we hold within
Your blood, your breed, your kindred, the land that you are from
The eyes of war will see your race and your native tongue
The eyes of war see borders dividing human kind
And to the world that we share the eyes of war are blind
War will hide its demon face behind religion's veil
And breed in you contempt for those who worship and who hail
Some strange and foreign holly sage that you have never known
For war has surely given you one god to call your own
My friend if you will listen, I ask of you no more
Please beware the devil's child we've come to know as war
For war it will disguise itself with many righteous names
Democracy and freedom are pawns within war's game
For war will surely tell you that for them the bullets fly
And for our Lady Liberty some must surely die
Well, one thing I can tell you, one thing that's for sure
Never are we truly free until we're free of war
One thing I can tell you, one thing that's for sure
Never are we truly free until we're free of war
I'm thinkin' about a girl a long, long way from me
She's got chestnut eyes as deep as the sea
Her hair is as black as a raven's wing
She laughs and she cries, she dances and sings
Her light is as bright as the warm sunshine
Don't you know that someday I'm gonna make her mine
'Cause there ain't nothin' any sweeter in this world
Than the love of a North Country girl
I think of her often in times like these
And I wonder if she's ever thinkin' of me
When I'm lost in the darkness of my lonely night
When I'm feelin' blind she gives me sight
Her light is as bright as the warm sunshine
Don't you know that someday I'm gonna make her mine
'Cause there ain't nothin' any sweeter in this world
Than the love of a North Country girl
There ain't nothin' any sweeter in this world
Than the love of a North Country girl
I am the rich controlling the poor
I'm a politician startin' up a war
I've got my share but I want more
I am the demon, I am the snake
I am the man for whom you toil
I am the rising price of oil
I am pollution in your soil
I am the demon, I am the snake
I am the one putting you to sleep
I am religion, I am T.V.
I tell you what to think, I tell you what to dream
I am the demon, I am the snake
I'm always asking you to pay
I'm the latest craze up on display
I am master of the third world slave
I am the demon, I am the snake
I prey upon your lonesome fear
I am the blindness you hold dear
I am the truth that you don't hear
I am the demon, I am the snake
I am the rich controlling the poor
I'm a politician startin' up a war
I've got my share but I want more
I am the demon, I am the snake
Take my hand and walk with me
My friend, my love, my enemy
For I am a lonesome traveler
Bound in chains you see
I am a weary prisoner
Searching for release
Forgive me Lord, for I have sinned
And given my heart away to the wind
For I am a lonesome traveler
Bound in chains you see
I am a weary prisoner
Won't you set me free?
Take my hand and walk with me
My friend, my love, my enemy
For I am a lonesome traveler
Bound in chains you see
I am a weary prisoner
Searching for release
I've got a cactus baby livin' in my head
I've got a cactus baby sleepin' in my bed
Cactus baby, cactus baby
You know the cactus baby is the sharpest one of all
I've got a cactus baby sittin' in my chair
I've got a cactus baby at the top of the stairs
Cactus baby, cactus baby
Don't you catch the cactus baby when it falls
Well, the cactus baby doesn't really drink a lot
And the cactus baby likes the sun more than it ought to
But when it comes to jabbin', to pokin' and to stabin'
You know the cactus baby's gonna give you all it's got
I've got a cactus baby singin' in my brain
I've got a cactus baby drivin' me insane
Cactus baby, cactus baby
You know the cactus baby is a prickly one to call
Jesus was a kindhearted man
The type that most people don't understand
He was sent down from heaven above
To teach God's children to forgive and to love
He said "Do unto others as you'd have done unto yourself
And peace will be with you in sickness and in health"
And some people listened and tried to understand
Jesus was a kindhearted man
Jesus was a kindhearted man
The type that most people don't understand
He spread his love and grace across the land
Healing the wounded with the touch of his hand
But his heart was too good, his heart was too pure
And the people were afraid, the people were unsure
They nailed him to a cross because they couldn't understand
Jesus was a kindhearted man
They lay him in a tomb in the mouth of a cave
And they rolled a giant stone to seal off his grave
But when three days had past, so it's said
Jesus rose up from the dead
And the people were aghast, the people were in awe
They began to believe it was the good Lord they saw
And so many people started trying hard to understand
Jesus was a kindhearted man
Well, the word it spread like wildfire and Jesus found fame
And the people they built churches to worship his name
But in time they lost sight of their creed
And the churches were run with avarice and greed
They grew hungry for power and they gathered it with zeal
They took money from the poor who were begging to be healed
And they hoarded all the riches because they couldn't understand
Jesus was a kindhearted man
Now, many of these people who tried to understand
Took the teachings of Jesus away to foreign lands
But they'd forgotten about peace, forgiveness and love
They began to hate and they began to judge
And they carried a cross with his image in their hands
As they raped and they pillaged and they took all the land
And they killed in his name because they couldn't understand
Jesus was a kindhearted man
Jesus was a kindhearted man
Jesus was a kindhearted man
The type that most people don't understand
Darlin', let me take you home to the land where I was born
The winters there are icy cold but the summers they are warm
I'll show you 'round the countryside where the trees grow tall and green
The rivers run as clear as day and the air is crisp and clean
Oh darlin', can't you see?
Oh darlin', come with me
Well, maybe we could find ourselves a spot to call our own
I'll get a job, we'll settle down and build ourselves a home
We could have some children, in the forest they could play
And swim down in the river that runs as clear as day
Oh darlin', can't you see?
Oh darlin', come with me
There's an orchard on a hillside that we could get to know
And a meadow in a valley where the wildflowers grow
Darlin', something's wrong, this place just don't look right to me
There's a coalmine on the hillside where the orchard used to be
There's an oilfield in the valley, the meadow looks beaten and worn
The trees have all been cut you see, this land is stripped and torn
Darlin', pack your bags this ain't no place for us to stay
This ain't no place to build a home or for children to play
No child of mine's gonna run her feet on this polluted soil
The air is thick with smoke and smog and the river's black with oil
Oh darlin', can't you see?
Oh darlin', come with me
Oh darlin', can't you see?
Oh darlin', come with me
Don't let the rain paint you blue
It's only passing through
Locked in the cupboard
Tying knots in yourself
You got stuck up on the shelf
But don't let the rain paint you blue
It's only passing through
Open up your eyes
Look for the sunshine
To lift up the weight of your mind
Don't let the rain paint you blue
It's only passing through
Locked in the cupboard
Tying knots in yourself
You got stuck up on the shelf
Don't let the rain paint you blue
It's only passing through
I've been traveling so long and so far
I've come undone, I've come apart
I am a million pieces scattered on the floor
I really cannot say who I am anymore
I was one, I was pure
Now I'm broken, now I am so unsure
They say the richest souls look within to find their wealth
And the lost can only find themselves
I say a prayer for those who dare to walk off of the road
I sing this song for those who never find there way back home
And in the dusk at the end of the day
Who may proclaim never to have gone astray?
It's in unfamiliar places that loneliness resides
And in unfamiliar places a lonely soul confides
If you should ever try to leave the shallows on your own
You may find before you learn to swim you're sinking like a stone
And if you search through the night for the dawn
You may find all you're looking for is a place where you belong
PAINTING PICTURES (2006)
She’s the tender dawn
Breaking through the night
She’s the warmth of day
She’s the sun so bright
And all that you want is to cast a shadow
And all that you want is to stand in the light
She’s a mountain top
She’s the highest peak
She’s everything
For which you seek
And all that you want is to cast a shadow
And all that you want is to stand in the light
She’s the garden, she’s the fountain
She’s the Eastern sky and she’s the spring
She’s the spring
She’s the spring
You who have walked so far
Lost in the winding dark
Cut by hunger’s dagger swift and sharp
The bread of your concern
Is weaving taciturn
Blankets ‘round your prayers for safe return
Ezmerelda, go and rest your heavy head
Ezmerelda, take your weary bones to bed
And let the morning bring what it may
You’ve tread on these back roads
And through thorn laden groves
You’re walking high upon fragile stone
Ezmerelda, go and rest your heavy head
Ezmerelda, take your weary bones to bed
And let the morning bring what it may
I was once and armored child
Of the morning’s rising arc
Searching for a compass
And trying to find an old landmark
And autumn leaves are turning color
The wind is whispering
To the lone gypsy traveler
Paddling down stream
The path is long and so they say
That sometimes it’s hard to know
When the castles turn to dust
Just which way your meant to go
And autumn leaves are turning color
The wind is whispering
To the lone gypsy traveler
Paddling down stream
When the leaves do fall
And the flowers wilt
And the green grass fades
That’s when I’ll be on my way
And autumn leaves are turning color
The wind is whispering
To the lone gypsy traveler
Paddling down stream
Robin Red, where have you been?
In golden light, in pastures green
Down South I rode these wings
Down South I learned to sing
Robin Red, take me please
And let me ride beneath your wing
Down South to pastures green|
So I might learn to sing
Lady of the midnight sun
Searching through the sand
For golden rings
To fit her hand
I walked upon her spider’s web
I let her read my palm
And we were one
And she was gone
I searched the seven seas
I walked through foreign lands
But all she left for me
Were footprints in the sand
Lady of the midnight sun
With diamonds in her eyes
I gave to her
All my lullabies
I searched the seven seas
I walked through foreign lands
But all she left for me
Were footprints in the sand
Wherever you are there you are
In pale twilight
The moon and the stars shine
But don’t hold too tight
Onto the night
It’s just the night
Wherever you are there you are
The milk of dawn will come
Walk these shanty streets of fortune
To taste the sun
Lay down your gun
Wherever you are there you are
With your evening bird
Singing songs
And you’ve already heard
Those rusted words
It’s just the night
Don’t hold too tight|
Onto the night
It’s just the night
Here I sit out in the desert, thirsty as can be
And the ocean’s never felt so far away from me
Once I had a garden in the richest soil of all
Once I had a line to hold and catch me when I fall
I find I meet myself sometimes in mirrored alleyway
With a mask to hide the shadow standing in my place
I’ve been searching for a girl who plays a golden harp
I’ve been on a crooked ladder climbing in the dark
In my mind I keep a bag of pretty holidays
Shooting stars and crystal ships to carry me away
Here I sit out in the desert, thirsty as can be
And the ocean’s never felt so far away from me|
In my mind I keep a bag of pretty holidays
Shooting stars and crystal ships to carry me away
Oh, this life seems strange to me
The way it comes and goes
Everyone beneath the sun
Must surely leave our kingdom
Everyone is holding hands
We are castles made of sand
We are lonely skeletons
We are dust blowin’ in the wind
On the shoreline you and I
Hold our hearts of stone
Broken by the shallow sigh
Of the wind as it blows
Everyone is holding hands
We are castles made of sand
We are lonely skeletons
We are dust blowin’ in the wind
We light our candles
In the darkness of the night
The tide rolls in and out again
And all the ships go passing by
Everyone is holding hands
We are castles made of sand
We are lonely skeletons
We are dust blowin’ in the wind
Goodnight, goodnight
Bid farewell to the light
Let evening’s cradle hold you
The sun it has retired another day
And your dreams they are as light as butterflies
And your blanket is as warm as lullabies
Goodnight, goodnight
Bid farewell to the light
The time has come at last
To slip away
And your pillow is as soft as baby’s breath
Goodnight until the morning
Goodnight until the morning
Goodnight, goodnight
Bid farewell to the light
Let evenings cradle hold you
The sun it has retired another day
And your dreams they are as light as butterflies
And your blanket is as warm as lullabies
Goodnight until the morning
Goodnight until the morning
